- John J. Bilek, 82, of Sanborn, NY, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, NY, following a long illness. He was born in Cleveland, OH on April 12, 1927, the son of Lillian (Babaka) Shaak and step-son of Frank Shaak.John served in the United States Army during WW II and later served with the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, serving from 1947 to 1967 and attained the rank of M/Sgt. He was employed by Niagara Mohawk in the forestry division for 20 years prior to his retirement.During his retirement John worked for the H.A. Treichler and Sons delivering their flowers throughout Western New York, as well as Goodman's Farm with their produce. He was a longtime member of the St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church of North Tonawanda, NY, where he had served as President of the Church Council. He was an exempt member of the Sanborn Fire Co., and served as Captain of the Fire Police for many years. He was a volunteer for the Tri-Community Ambulance, where he was a driver for several years. He was a Past Commander of the Sanborn American Legion Post 969, and a member of the Air Force SSgt's Association and Air Force Association.Surviving is his wife, the former Gracellyn Wendt; three children, Wayne, Craig and Denise R. Bilek, all of Sanborn, NY; his loving grandchildren, Rachel V. Bilek, Ashley and Dominique DiPietro and Joshua Hertel; also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, James Bilek.The family will be present at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, Sanborn, 5893 Hoover Road, from 7-9 PM Wednesday and from 2-4 and 7-9 PM Thursday. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 AM at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church, 64 Felton Street, North Tonawanda, NY. Interment with Military Honors will be in the Acacia Park Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church.American Legion Post #969 will conduct memorial services Thursday at 7:30 PM, and the Sanborn Fire Co. will have a memorial service at 8 PM
