Lewiston - M. Isabelle Steinbrenner, age 103, of Lewiston, Niagara County, NY, died Tuesday, October 2, 2007 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, Lewiston, after a lengthy illness. Born on April 18, 1904, on the family farm "the Owl's Nest" in the Township of Sennett, near Auburn, NY, to John Henry and Lila Mae (Simmons) Van Den Bosch. Her family also lived for a short time in Ithaca, NY, before moving to Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, where she met and married her husband, Gottlieb J. ''GUS'' Steinbrenner on June 22, 1922. After her husband's death in 1965, Isabelle moved to Lewiston where for a number of years she remained an active member of the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Niagara Falls. Often referred to as the family Matriarch and the "Keeper of the family history", Isabelle would recount tales of her life that involved traveling to a one room schoolhouse in a horse drawn sleigh, oil lamps, the flapper era, learning to drive in a Model T Ford, ice wagons, rationing, Liberty gardens, Yankee Baseball games, Babe Ruth, dances, train trips and trolley car rides as well as watching man's first step on the moon and cable TV. Upon reaching her 100th birthday, Isabelle received greetings from the President and Governor as well as her husbands cousin, George Steinbrenner, Owner of the New York Yankees, but her most cherished memory was being surrounded by friends am family, especially her brothers, Fred and Joe; and sisters, Fran and Kay. Isabelle is survived by two brothers, Frederick and Joseph Van Den Bosch; a sister, Francis Deutsch; a son-in-law, Richard Carr; granddaughters, Jeanine Carr (William Mollosky), Roberta (Frank) Skurski, and Kathleen (Brian) Harold; great grandchildren, Gerald (Rochelle) Skurski, Robert and Margaret Harold; and great great grandchildren, Matthew am Emma Skurski; also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and her beloved home care aids (her girls). Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her daughters, Lila M. Crewe and Roberta M. Carr; her son-in-law, Richard Crewe; her grandsons, Richard and James D. Carr; three brothers, John Victor, John and Grover; and four sisters, Lila, Victoria, Catherine and Ruth; and all of her brothers and sisters-in-law; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call at the HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth and Ridge Sts., Lewiston on Sunday from 2-5 and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held on Monday (October 8th) at 10:30 AM from the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston with Rev. Thomas Mason officiating. Burial in St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Bergholz, NY. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials to the Lutheran Church of the Messiah, Lewiston; St. Pauls Lutheran Church; The Lewiston Volunteer Fire Co. # 1 Ambulance Fund; HART Interfaith, Inc. or a charity of ones choice.
